Government Initiatives
Recycling in Public Places Initiative
The Recycling in Public Places Initiative seeks to establish a network of easily recognisable recycling bins in high foot-traffic and key tourist locations across New Zealand by 2010 . This will provide New Zealanders and overseas visitors with the option to recycle while they are out and about.
Household Sustainability Programme
This programme is making it easier for Kiwis to improve their lifestyles, save money, keep New Zealand’s environment healthy, clean and green, and respond to climate change. The programme engages directly with the public through a website, home shows and other community events.
Business partnerships for sustainability
The business partnerships for sustainability programme aims to promote and develop the adoption of sustainable business practices in New Zealand.
Eco-verification Programme
Through this programme, Government will work with businesses and sectors to identify the standards, tools and verification infrastructure that will support a drive towards the development, use and export of eco-friendly goods and services.
Government to buy sustainable goods and services
The Government will develop a single procurement policy to ensure sustainably produced goods and services are purchased wherever possible.
Carbon Neutral Public Service Programme
Six public service departments are taking the lead on achieving carbon neutrality by 2012. Twenty-eight other agencies will be well on the way to carbon neutrality by the same date.

Sustainability Funding
Sustainability Management Fund
The SMF has $4.32 million available per annum to support the community, iwi, industry and/or local government in taking practically focused action which produces long-term environmental benefits.
Shell New Zealand Sustainability Fund
The Shell New Zealand Sustainability Fund aims to help SMEs develop and implement systems that will enable them to operate in a sustainable, environmentally responsible way.
EECA Energy Intensive Business project
EECA offers cash grants to businesses which spend more than 5% of its total business costs on energy, towards an energy efficiency project.
The Tindall Foundation
Support initiatives in New Zealand which assist communities to contribute towards a better life for all New Zealanders. Five focus areas for funding support have been put in place, and these include caring for our environment and preserving biodiversity.

Provides information on sources of advice and funding for tourism businesses.
