New Zealand’s local government is made up of twelve regional councils and seventy three territorial authorities. Councils are responsible for promoting the social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being of their communities.
At a national level the interests of the 85 councils are represented by Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ). LGNZ promotes best practice in the local government sector and provides policy support, advice and training to councils
Outcome Four of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 is, “The Tourism Sector and Communities Work Together for Mutual Benefit”.
The Tourism Planning Toolkit is a set of tools to help local authorities plan for tourism and tackle specific tourism-related issues.
Adequate infrastructure is critical to delivering a world-class visitor experience. The Ministry of Tourism has a long term role to play in supporting infrastructure development in New Zealand.
There are 30 Regional Tourism Organisations in New Zealand, which are responsible for promoting their region to domestic and international visitors.
