Maori Regional Tourism Organisations

Maori Regional Tourism Organisations (MRTOs) are self-identified collectives of Maori tourism operators in a particular region.
There are currently 12 MRTOs operating as members of the New Zealand Maori Tourism Council’s MRTO network.
Role of MRTOs
While the role of the MRTOs can vary from region to region, key functions include:
- facilitating coordination and cooperation among members;
- educating members about the industry;
- providing networking opportunities;
- linking Maori operators with relevant assistance programmes;
- providing Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) with an avenue into Maori tourism product in their area; and
- working with RTOs to ensure Maori operators are represented well in the RTOs’ marketing and product development activities.

The 12 Maori Regional Tourism Organisations are:
- Auckland Maori Tourism Association
- Central North Island Maori Tourism Society
- Gisborne, Tai Rawhiti Ventures Inc.
- Hawkes Bay Maori Tourism Trust
- Maori in Tourism Rotorua
- Maori Tourism Taranaki Trust
- Tauranga Moana Maori Tourism Inc.
- Tai Tokerau Tourism
- Te Ara a Maui (greater Wellington region)
- Te Waipounamu / South Island
- Tourism King Country Maori Inc.
- Whanganui Maori Regional Tourism Organisation
