Tourism New Zealand is a crown entity, wholly owned by the Government. It is the trading name for the New Zealand Tourism Board.
Under the New Zealand Tourism Board Act 1991, the objective of Tourism New Zealand is:
'to market New Zealand as a visitor destination to maximise long-term benefits and to this end develop, implement, and promote strategies for tourism and advise the Government and the New Zealand tourism industry on matters relating to those strategies'.
The Minister of Tourism is responsible for overseeing and managing the Crown’s interest in, and relationship with Tourism New Zealand. The Minister’s responsibilities include:
- Appointment of members to the TNZ board,in consultation with the Tourism Industry Association.
- Conveying to the TNZ Board the Government’s expectations. This is to ensure that TNZ activities align with the strategic direction of the Government.
- Negotiating annually a Statement of Intent and Annual Plan outlining strategic direction and deliverables for the year.
- Monitoring TNZ in line with the Statement of Intent and Annual Plan.
- Overseeing large budget and capital decisions, with the purpose of ensuring the entity is viable.
The Ministry of Tourism acts as the Minister’s agent and provides advice and assistance to the Minister to carry out this role.
