New Zealand Cycle Trail Project
A national project to build a network of cycle trails is underway.
Funding Approved for Eight More Cycle Trails - 6 July 2010
Funding has been confirmed ahead of schedule for the construction of eight new cycle trails under Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail (NZCT) project.
The government has confirmed $18.85 million for the construction of the eight trails. These trails, together with five trails already approved, are expected to provide 1,700km of trail once completed.

Seven potential cycle trail routes that construction could start on this summer have been identified. The Government has set aside $9 million from the $50 million New Zealand Cycle Trail Fund for projects earmarked for a ‘Quick Start’.
Thirteen cycle trails were selected in February 2010 to go through to feasibility studies for inclusion in Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail project. The New Zealand Cycle Trail fund will contribute to the feasibility studies.
The funding process for Phase Two of the New Zealand Cycleway project was announced by the Ministry of Tourism on 15 October 2009. The process to apply for funding will occur in three stages.
Prime Minister, Hon John Key, officially launched the NZ Cycle Trail project at Little Waipa Domain, South Waikato, and unveiled the project’s new brand on 10 November.
