Climate Change

Last updated: September 2008

Climate change matters to New Zealand tourism. New Zealand's distance from most key markets makes journey-related greenhouse gas emissions, costs and consumer perceptions key issues for the sector.

New Zealand’s environment is also an essential element of our 100% Pure New Zealand brand and is a big influencer on the expectations and experience of our visitors.

Tourism contributes 9.2% of GDP to New Zealand’s economy, 18% of export revenue, and employment for almost 1 in 10 New Zealanders. The high value of tourism to New Zealand makes it critical that tourism climate change issues are factored into climate change policy.

Tourism and Climate Change Plan

Industry and government have worked together to develop a Tourism and Climate Change Plan which identifies the key priorities and highlights actions that can be taken to help the sector respond effectively.

Tourism and Climate Change Plan

The Plan identifies the following priority areas:

  • Maintain effective messaging and positioning in New Zealand's key markets
  • Enable and ensure an ongoing response by tourism businesses
  • Respond effectively to concerns about Greenhouse Gas Emissions generated by flying to and from New Zealand
  • Establish a forward research agenda for climate change and tourism

The actions within the plan include work across government and industry that is already well underway as well as a range of new initiatives.

Climate change issues are varied, changing all the time and will be part of tourism's strategic environment for the long term. Our climate change response will need to adapt over time and the Plan has been developed to take this into account.
