Industry Training Organisations

Industry Training Organisations are industry bodies designed to raise New Zealand’s levels of skill. They are recognised by the government under the Industry Training Act 1992, and receive funding from both the industry and the government.
ITOs do not deliver workplace learning and training themselves but rather, work with industry partners to develop nationally recognised qualifications and traning that suits the needs of the particular industry. Training programmes can be designed to take place on-the-job or off-the-job.
Above all, ITOs work to help attract people into industries, provide skill development within these industries, and help retain valuable, skilled workers within New Zealand.
There are three ITOs relevant to the tourism industry:
- The Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO) develops training for the aviation, tourism, museum and travel industries, providing both career and qualification options.
- The Hospitality Standards Institute (HIS) monitors and develops NZQA unit standards and qualifications for the hospitality industry. This includes chefs, waiters, porters, hotel receptionists, duty managers, bar persons, house-keepers.
- Skills Active is responsible for the Sport, Fitness, Community Recreation; Snowsport; Outdoor Recreation and Nga Mahi a te Rehia sectors. Previously known as Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Organisation (SFRITO), and relaunched as Skills Active in January 2009.
