Business Incubators
A Business Incubator is a facility designed to assist businesses to become established and profitable during their start up phase.
They do this by providing:
- shared premises,
- business advice,
- business services,
- networking,
- mentoring,
- a full time manager.
Incubator funding awards
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) Incubator Awards provide one-off, contestable cash rewards to participating New Zealand incubators. So far, $4.25 million has been awarded over three funding rounds.
Applications for funding are called for once per year. Funding is not ongoing or automatic, and incubators cannot rely on awards for continued viability.
Conditions for funding
NZTE will need to be convinced that your incubator:
- accelerates and complements the development of private sector initiatives,
- is actively working towards international best practice standards,
- complements the activities of other stakeholders in business incubators.
Your incubator might apply for an award to:
- extend the capability and capacity of the incubator (but not “bricks & mortar”),
- develop and implement a project to offer an additional service,
- employ or train an incubator manager or administration assistant,
- pay for mentoring or other external services that will improve the success chances of tenant companies,
- implement new systems or processes (e.g. new computers or IT networking).
