Putea Whakaako (Poutama Maori Business Trust)

Poutama Maori Business Trust’s business training funding aims to help business people to gain relevant skills or management support.  It covers, but is not limited to:

• Short, business-focussed courses for business owners and managers
• Institute of Directors Training Courses (Please note: applicants must be actively involved in a governance role).
• Management support work by independent advisers or experts
• Business mentoring (an expert can advise on daily business operations).
• Business assessments and reviews to assist business owners and managers to increase profits and production

Business Training Funding covers up to 50 percent of costs, to a maximum of $2,000. Funding for training courses by any one provider is limited to $10,000 per year

Capacity Building

Capacity Building is a development programme targeting whänau, hapu, iwi and Maori organisations to enable them to develop the capacity of their organisation and is administered by Te Puni Kokiri (The Ministry of Maori Development).

Te Puni Kokiri may help by:

• Providing information and advice.
• Facilitating access to the programmes, services and funding of other agencies.
• Coordinating the involvement of government agencies.
• If the criteria is met, TPK may assist with funding to support projects.

Current Position Analysis

A Current Position Analysis (CPA) is an external appraisal of a business’s position regarding effective use of technology, which will identify gaps or opportunities. Maximum funding available is $1,125 (including GST).

Enterprise Scholarships

The Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST) administers the Enterprise Scholarships (a Bright Future scheme) on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

Enterprise Scholarships support Scholars in undertaking a programme of research and study, which in most cases will be at postgraduate level.

• Access to talent, technology, knowledge and training – by working with students and research teams from any discipline area to develop improved processes, business solutions and to train existing staff.
• Opportunity to identify potential future staff

TIANZ - Tools and Templates Compact Disc

The Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ) is based in Wellington and represents approximately three and a half thousand tourism operators and organisations across the industry. TIANZ provides members with leadership, guidance and related services to help foster a viable and sustainable tourism industry for all New Zealanders to value and enjoy.

TIANZ core business includes managing three national industry events each year - TRENZ, New Zealand’s largest tourism trade event, the organisation and presentation of the New Zealand Tourism Awards, and the New Zealand Tourism Conference - a forum for the presentation of key issues facing the industry. By belonging to TIANZ, members gain access to leading edge quality improvements in the industry.

TIANZ sponsors projects such as Green Globe 21 – the internationally acclaimed environmental business programme, and TIANZ works in association with the Qualmark quality assurance system. The ‘Tourism Business Builder’ CD produced by TIANZ provides a simple yet effective resource for building new, or growing an existing, tourism business. It’s informative, relevant and has been tailor-made with the tourism industry and business in mind.

The easy-to follow modules include forming ideas, investigating potential, making plans, resourcing, promotion, selling and assessing impacts. The CD is available to full TIANZ members free of charge

Technology for Industry Fellowships Scheme

The Technology for Industry Fellowships (TIF) Programme enables students and experienced researchers to complete R&D projects in companies.

TIF aims to:

• Enhance scientific and technical skills and competencies in New Zealand businesses;
• Expose undergraduates, masters and doctorate students and post-doctoral researchers to an industrial environment;
• Create research and technology of benefit for businesses;
• Foster links between universities, research institutes and businesses.

TIF supports science, technology and engineering projects conducted in, and managed by, companies. The Fellow must spend a minimum of 50% of his/her time on the project in the company.

Industry Training and Apprenticeships

Industry Training is administered by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and has been developed by industry to give the workforce the skills and knowledge that will give New Zealand industry a competitive edge. It is designed to be convenient and cost effective. There are currently over 78,000 Industry Trainees, of whom well over a third are seeking to gain the National Certificates that replaced the traditional ‘apprenticeship orders’.

Modern apprenticeships forms part of the Industry Training Strategy and aims to extend the benefits of industry training to young people.

Modern apprenticeships makes it easy for employers to recruit and manage talented young people into their workplace and offer a new generation the chance to access quality workplace learning. It is administered by the Tertiary Education Commission who contract the services of 47 Modern Apprenticeships Co-ordinater Organisations.

The TEC is based in Wellington and also has a network of eleven regional offices. This enables the organisation to respond to sector needs at both a national and regional level.

Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO)

This non-profit Industry Training Organisation works with Maori Tourism Operaters to upskill staff to enable them to gain nationally recognised tourism qualifications whilst on the job. Subsidies and Modern Apprenticeships in tourism are now available.

Enterprise Training

The Enterprise Training programme assists:

• people wanting to start a business
• owners and operators of SMEs to grow their businesses and plan for the future.

The programme offers training for running and managing a business and coaching to support and assist further business development.

Eligibility

Enterprise Training is open to owners/operators of small to medium businesses in New Zealand.
Enterprise Training also offers specialised training programmes for people who want to start a business and for Trustees of Maori Owned Assets under the Te Ture Whenua Maori Act.

Cost

Enterprise Training is a fully funded government programme. The investment for the client is in their time, effort and commitment. In return, they will receive assistance that is aimed at benefiting their businesses.

Business Health Check

Participants in the Enterprise Training programme will spend time with an independent professional discussing their business.
This will enable the identification of their business management needs and upskilling options within and outside of Enterprise Training. This process drives the training components of the programme.

The health check ensures:

• clients gain a clear understanding of how the Enterprise Training programme can benefit them
• a sound working relationship between client and service provider is formed and maintained;
• business management and upskilling needs of the business owner/manager are accurately identified
• barriers to business performance (problem resolution) and future business opportunities (opportunity realisation) are identified
• participation by clients in the training programmes
• clients are educated about other New Zealand Trade and Enterprise services available

Enterprise Training topics

Business Development topics include:

• Marketing – marketing plans, brochure writing
• Business planning
• Accounting – pricing and costing, financial statements, budgets and cash flows
• Sales – sales strategies, cold calling
• Managing Resources – staff management, motivating staff, appraisal processes, time management
• E-Commerce
• Compliance – Taxation, OSH, ACC, Employment

Workshops

As part of the client’s development programme, clients are encouraged to participate in a range of short, concise and specific workshops.
The workshops are designed so that clients leave with ideas, knowledge and tips that they can actually implement in their businesses.
Some of the workshops available have been created to meet the needs of those working in specialised industries.
The benefits of participating in one of these sessions include:

• practical learning using real business examples
• on the spot problem solving
• sharing of ideas, knowledge and tips
• small numbers of people encouraging group participation
• opportunities to network with like-minded business people
• coaching

After workshops, business coaches are available to clients for one on one sessions, allowing clients to develop the ideas learnt and apply them to their businesses.

Business Growth Service

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise provide grants, from its Growth Services Fund to support high growth potential firms to purchase external advice and expertise, market intelligence and development services.

Grants up to a maximum of 50% of the qualifying costs are available for individual or groups of firms to access new business opportunities, skills and expertise, innovation and new technologies and finance. The Fund is only accessible for companies that have a clear and significant growth potential and for whom a development plan has been compiled with an NZTE client manager.

Escalator Scheme

The Escalator service has been developed to address one of the main hurdles to growth for the thousands of businesses and entrepreneurs in New Zealand – the lack of access to and understanding of equity/venture capital or strategic partnerships. It replaces the former Investment Ready Scheme.

It is aimed at assisting business growth by providing innovative small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurial New Zealanders who need capital to expand, diversify or commercialise a new concept with skills and assistance to pursue investment opportunities.

Through the Escalator service participants can develop a greater understanding of the issues around funding their business growth, learn when additional investment is needed and how to access it. Some may also gain help in securing equity capital and/or a strategic partnership
