Tourism is an important driver of economic activity within New Zealand. Many regions and local communities have identified the role that tourism can play in the growth of their economies through job creation, export earnings and diversification to reduce dependence on traditional industries.

The Ministry of Tourism is part of the Ministry of Economic Development. This relationship facilitates the contribution of tourism perspectives and issues to Government economic and regional development policies, and the programmes of the Ministry of Economic Development and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
