Regional Tourism Organisations New Zealand
Benchmarking Study
The Benchmarking Study presents the results of a 2004 survey of all
Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) that identifies and compares RTO:
- income
- expenditure
- activities
- staffing
- governance
- information technology use
Findings indicate that the organisational structures of RTOs are very
diverse. All RTOs identify destination marketing as their top priority,
followed by convention sales, destination management planning and the
provision of business advice.
During the 2003/04 financial year, RTOs collectively received
$30.1 million in funding, excluding revenue from visitor centres. Around
70% of this funding came from local government.
The 2004 survey updates the information collected in the 2003
benchmarking study. Prior to the 2003 survey, little work had been taking
on assessing benchmarks and averages across the diverse RTO sector.
