Regional Tourism Organisations New Zealand
Research and Monitoring
The Research and Monitoring Review summarises the results of a
survey of all Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) regarding local
level tourism research.
RTOs were surveyed about their use of core
tourism statistics and the methodologies they use to collect
information on visitor numbers, flows, activities, behaviour and
satisfaction.
The primary objective of the study was to identify
what research and data is needed to help RTOs and local government
manage tourism more effectively in the future.
The ability to measure tourism trends and impacts at a local and
regional level will assist in measuring RTO performance and enable
local government to better plan for tourism infrastructure and
services. It will also assist the tourism industry in developing business
plans and assessing feasibility.
The review identified four major gaps in the regional information
available and went on to make recommendations, with potential costings,
to address these gaps.
The areas identified were:
- Visitor expenditure
- Visitor satisfaction
- Economic benefit
- Visitor nights
