RTO/Maori Tourism Group Partnerships

A key objective of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010 is greater participation by Maori in tourism.

Specifically, the Strategy calls upon Maori to partner with Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) to agree roles and accountabilities on regional tourism planning and development, destination marketing and destination management.

RTOs have met with Maori Regional Tourism Groups in their regions, and in May 2003 a national hui was held in Rotorua. Individual RTOs and Maori Regional Tourism Groups are continuing to work towards building strong relationships.

As part of follow up on progress in the development of MRTO/RTO relationships, the Ministry undertook a project that examined relationships between MRTOs and RTOs that began in December 2004.

The key output we sought was a list of key elements that contribute to a mutually beneficial MRTO/RTO relationship, and some specific examples, where available.

You can download the powerpoint slideshow that was given to RTONZ and the New Zealand Maori Tourism Council in February 2005. The presentation includes information on the project overview, project methodology and project findings.

You can also download a table that records the partnership status of RTOs and Maori Regional Tourism Groups (PDF 83KB) immediately following the hui held in Rotorua in 2003.
