Initial Response to the Tourism Strategy

The New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010 contains 43 key recommendations, of which over half relate strongly to Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs).

In 2002, RTOs delivered their initial response to the Tourism Strategy. The objective was to provide a co-ordinated response on behalf of all RTOs that addressed:

  • the implications of the Tourism Strategy for RTOs
  • priority setting for further RTO initiatives in response to Tourism Strategy recommendations
  • RTO role definition and operational efficiency
  • contribution to Maori tourism development
  • linkages with local government
  • links between destination marketing and destination management

As a result, a set of actions were identified to guide further RTO work in implementing the Tourism Strategy.
