The New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 is an ambitious strategy. It's vision is that in 2015, tourism is valued as the leading contributor to a sustainable New Zealand economy.’
Two Maori principles are central to this vision: Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga.
‘Kaitiakitanga’ means guardianship, care and protection. It provides a basis for our approach to sustainably managing our natural and cultural environment for current and future generations.
‘Manaakitanga’ means sharing exceptional and natural hospitality, knowledge and beliefs, on the basis of mutual respect between host and visitor.
The Strategy contains 92 recommended actions grouped into four themes:
- New Zealand provides a world-class visitor experience
- New Zealand’s tourism sector is prosperous and attracts ongoing investment
- Tourism takes a leading role in protecting and enhancing the environment
- Tourism and communities work together for mutual benefit
