Infrastructure

All international and domestic tourists to New Zealand use infrastructure during their visit. Infrastructure includes:

  • accommodation,
  • transport (aircraft, buses, taxis, train stations),
  • roads and road signs,
  • water and sewerage systems,
  • telecommunications,
  • conference facilities,
  • parks and public facilities.

The Ministry of Tourism has developed the Tourism Demand Subsidy Scheme to assist small communities with high tourism flows to invest in water and sewerage infrastructure to sustain their tourism industry.

Adequate infrastructure is critical in ensuring a quality experience for visitors. Lack of infrastructure is a barrier to tourism growth.

Responsibility for the provision and maintenance of infrastructure rests with a wide range of government and non-government organisations, including local government, Regional Tourism Organisations, Transit New Zealand, Ministry of Transport, tourism operators and central government.

The Ministry of Tourism works with involved agencies to build understanding of the importance of infrastructure to sustainable tourism growth, highlight any problem areas and ensure that needs are addressed.

The Ministry is currently leading a three year cross-departmental project to look at infrastructure requirements across New Zealand in light of the forecast increases in tourism demand. The project aims to apply tourism forecast models to existing infrastructure demand models. This will mean potential bottlenecks can be identified and addressed before they occur.
