Visiting New Zealand

Find out about visiting the regions of New Zealand on the official site for destination New Zealand www.newzealand.com. This site offers maps of the different regions, key information about each region, highlights of what to see and do in the area and where to get more information.

Doing Business

If you have a business enquiry about a specific region, contact the relevant Regional Tourism Organisation or Regional Council.

  • Regional Tourism Organisations (RTO's) conduct marketing and research on behalf of the regions of New Zealand.

  • Regional Councils provide the local laws and systems to support businesses, including roading, parks & facilities, licenses & consents, quality control and resource management.

Doing Research

Because the Ministry of Tourism works at a national level, we do not undertake extensive research on tourism in the regions. The following Ministry publications contain regional level information:

  • The Commercial Accommodation Survey gives regional breakdowns of establishment types, number and origin of guests, nights stayed, capacity and occupancy rates.

  • The Domestic Travel Survey gives regional breakdowns of the travel patterns of New Zealanders. Regional data includes: day trips, overnight trips, nights per trip, trips per capita, main reason of trips and expenditure.

  • The International Visitor Survey provides some information on regional travel by international visitors, including visitor numbers, accommodation usage, length of stay and purpose of travel.

  • Regional Tourism Forecasts provide anticipated visitor numbers, length of stay and expenditure in each region through until 2011.

Some Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) also conduct their own research about tourism in the region. Get in touch with your local RTO to see what information they can provide.
